One of the things I strongly dislike is the endless battle scene, another is tiresome political maneuvering. Overall, I found this book to be a disappointing bore. He develops believable characters, and personalities that are intimately relatable despite the great width of time and circumstances that lies between the pages and the readers. This is the first in a series of novels and I will definitely read book two. The story starts with Uhtred losing his father and brother to the Danes. Obviously, I'm not the target audience for this one.

Uhtred, the main character, is captured by a Danish invader called Ragnar. This action might not be possible to undo.

He grows to love Ragnar as a father and he is in turn loved as a son. While I don't usually care for violence and blood, this book is thrilling. All the blood and guts a girl could ask for! Annoying at times if you admire early Christianity.

Exceptional descriptive writing in the battle scenes. Thus the English boy is raised by a Dane. Loved each and every part of this book.

Great adventures and battle scenes as you would expect. As Uhtred grows up he learns the Danish ways and Danish language whilst remaining on occupied English soil.

Hopefully I'll read the third book third but you never know. Cornwell has an excellent reputation for well-researched novels, and I'm sure this one is no exception.

It wasn't bad but I don't intend to read more in this series. He includes a note at the end detailing which characters were real and which events actually took place. The narrative carries you forward as told by the main character, Uhtred, a Saxon ealdorman, who grows from the age of ten to adulthood against the background of the Danish conquest. The characters on both sides are enthrallingly believable.

But without the horned helmets which were apparently a myth. And again we see world in transition.

This was my first sample of a Bernard Cornwell novel and I must admit I'm impressed with his writing style. Excalibur by Bernard Cornwell pdf.

Every gain in an evolved and peaceful consciousness has been hard fought. Kensukes Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. Highly recommended for fans of Cornwell or anyone who like historical adventure stories. There's an interesting concept in this book that I didn't really realise before now. Bernard Cornwell continues to impress me not just with his characterization and prose, but with his attention to time-setting and historical accuracy.

The fact that most of the people in the book were major players in the actual history make this book even greater. Since the Romans we have been invaded by the Danes, the Saxons, the Normans etc, etc. Who knew he was so annoyingly pious?
